International Convention 2010

The DKG International Convention 2010 was held in Spokane Washington State, 22.–26. July.

It was a very special moment when the new DKG Constitution was passed with very few amendments. For me the main change was in membership, the Constitution now reads: 'An active member shall be a woman who is employed as a professional educator or has retired from an active position'.

There were so many highlights it is difficult to pick one. We welcomed our new International President, Jensi Souders, and her team which included Kate York (GB), as European Regional Director. There was excellent music all the way through the convention, starting with jazz on Washington night.

We listened to high quality speakers with Leadership being the main theme:
John F Brock, CEO of Coca Cola was influenced by his mother, who was a member of DKG. He compared and contrasted managers and leaders, challenging us 'to be who you are and never compromise'.

Amanda Gore gave a 'high octane performance' with her message about the power of positive thinking and positive environment. Her 'ta'da' became a convention to do!

Christopher Rants, (Carolyn's son), has had eighteen years as a State Representative in the Iowa General Assembly. He described how legislators are now more than ever interested in hearing of good ideas for educational planning - and advised us on ways of influencing them.

Anne-Marie Rhodes revealed how she identified cultural waves in new trends and technologies explaining that these take many forms and are found by, for example, watching what devises and products are used by 14 year old girls in Japan - we will be using them a few years down the line!

Everyone was kept really busy with the range of activities offered: trips before the convention began, workshops, panel discussions, forums, evening events, entertainment, the marketplace with vendors, exhibitions and demonstrations all going on. Spokane was also a bright, modern city with plenty to see. The busiest people were the members from Washington State who did us proud!

Now is the time to consider going to the next International Convention - 2012 in New York.
